PUSHKAR FAIR (Kartik Purnima, October-November, Pushkar/Ajmer): Asia's LARGEST camel and cattle fair, attracting 200,000+ visitors including significant international tourist presence. Held on the banks of Pushkar Lake over approximately 7-10 days (5 days of cattle trading + religious bathing on Kartik Purnima). Camels, horses, cattle, and donkeys are traded. Cultural events include: camel beauty contests (decorated with embroidery, pom-poms, bells), camel races, longest moustache competition, turban-tying competition, matka phod, folk music and dance performances. On Kartik Purnima, lakhs of devotees bathe in Pushkar Lake — considered equivalent to performing Ashwamedha Yagna. The fair is jointly organized by the state government tourism department and local authorities. The only Brahma Temple in the world is adjacent to the fair ground.

BENESHWAR FAIR (Magh Purnima, January-February, Nawatapura/Dungarpur): Called 'KUMBH OF TRIBALS' (Adivasiyon ka Kumbh). Held at the TRIVENI SANGAM — confluence of Mahi, Som, and Jakham rivers at Beneshwar Dham. Primarily attended by BHIL tribe from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and MP. Religious significance: temple of Beneshwar Mahadev (Lord Shiva) on an island at the confluence. Tribal traditions of music, dance (Ghoomar by Bhil women), and trade. Second largest tribal fair in India. NAGAUR FAIR (January-February, Nagaur): India's SECOND largest cattle fair (after Pushkar). Also called 'Ramdev Pashu Mela'. Famous for: trading of bullocks, camels, horses; Nagaur's famous red MIRCHI (chilli) market. The Nagaur Fort serves as backdrop. Wood-carving and ironwork of Nagaur craftsmen displayed.

KHATU SHYAM JI FAIR (Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi-Dwadashi, February-March, Khatu/Sikar): One of the most visited temple fairs in Rajasthan. Dedicated to Barbarik (grandson of Bhima from Mahabharata). According to legend, Lord Krishna granted Barbarik the boon that he would be worshipped by the name of Krishna (Shyam) in Kaliyuga. Lakhs of devotees visit, especially from Haryana, UP, and Rajasthan. Langars (free community kitchens) are a major feature. KAILA DEVI FAIR (Chaitra Navratri, March-April, Karauli): Major SHAKTI PEETH fair. Kaila Devi is the kul-devi (family goddess) of Karauli rulers. LANGURIYA songs (unique folk songs in praise of the goddess's attendant Langur) are the most distinctive feature. Thousands of devotees, especially Meena tribe, attend. Located in the Vindhyan hills.

SHEETLA MATA FAIR (Chaitra Krishna Ashtami, March-April, Chaksu/Jaipur): Dedicated to Goddess Sheetla, protector from smallpox, chickenpox, and other skin diseases. KEY TRADITION: BASODA — devotees eat COLD FOOD the day before the fair (Basoda day). No cooking is done on Sheetla Ashtami — all food is prepared the previous day and eaten cold. This tradition originates from the belief that Sheetla Mata punishes those who use fire (heat) on her day. The fair at Chaksu (Jaipur) is the largest celebration. Sheetla Mata is depicted riding a donkey, carrying a broom and a pot of cooling water. GANGAUR FAIR (Chaitra Shukla Tritiya-Chaturthi, statewide, especially Jaipur/Udaipur): 18-DAY festival celebrating marital bliss. Married women worship GAURI (Parvati) and ISAR (Shiva) for their husband's long life. Grand procession with decorated Gauri-Isar idols through Jaipur streets (from City Palace to Talkatora Lake). Udaipur's Gangaur procession at Gangaur Ghat on Pichola. Unmarried girls pray for good husbands. Mewar celebrates Gangaur with special fervor — it's the most important festival of Rajasthan.

TEEJ FESTIVALS: Two distinct Teej celebrations — frequently confused in REET: (1) SAWAN/HARIYALI TEEJ (Shravana Shukla Tritiya, July-August): Celebrated statewide. Women fast for husband's well-being. Swings are decorated with flowers. Procession of Teej Mata in Jaipur. Marks the onset of monsoon. (2) KAJLI TEEJ (Bhadrapada Krishna Tritiya, August-September): Famous specifically in BUNDI (not Jaipur — this is a confirmed REET trap). Women fast, sing Kajli songs, and celebrate at night. The Bundi Kajli Teej procession through the old city is unique. KEY REET FACT: If a question mentions 'Kajli Teej' → answer is BUNDI. If 'Hariyali/Sawan Teej' → statewide/Jaipur.

RELIGIOUS/TEMPLE FAIRS: DUSSEHRA FAIR (Kota): LARGEST and OLDEST Dussehra celebration in Rajasthan. 25-day festival with cultural programmes, exhibitions, and processions. Effigy burning of Ravana at the climax. URS AT AJMER DARGAH (Ajmer): Annual death anniversary of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (Rajab 1-6, Islamic calendar). Millions attend from all religions and countries. Qawwali music performances. Offerings of 'Degh' (huge cooking pots) of food. RAMDEVRA FAIR (Bhadrapada Shukla 2-11, August-September, Ramdevra/Jaisalmer): Dedicated to Baba Ramdevji. One of the largest religious fairs. Attended by BOTH Hindus and Muslims. Devotees walk hundreds of kilometers. MAHAVIR JI FAIR (Chaitra Shukla, Chandanpur/Karauli-Sawai Madhopur border): Major Jain pilgrimage fair. Rath Yatra procession.

CATTLE/LIVESTOCK FAIRS (ranked by size): Pushkar (largest, Ajmer, Kartik Purnima), Nagaur (#2), Tilwara (Barmer — MALLINATH FAIR, one of the oldest cattle fairs, named after the 15th century ruler), Parbatsar-Merta (Nagaur — TEJAJI FAIR, on Bhadrapada Shukla Dashami), Balotra (Barmer), Gothameshwar (Jhunjhunu), Chandrabhaga (Jhalawar, on Kartik Purnima at Jhalarapatan). TRIBAL FAIRS: Beneshwar (Dungarpur, Bhil — 'Kumbh of Tribals'), Sita Bauri (Pratapgarh, tribal), BHAGORIYA (Banswara-Dungarpur, pre-Holi — unique tradition where young Bhil men and women choose marriage partners; a boy who gives a girl paan (betel leaf) and she accepts signifies consent). CULTURAL FESTIVALS: Camel Festival (January, Bikaner — camel beauty contests, races, polo), Mewar Festival (Udaipur, coincides with Gangaur), Marwar Festival (Jodhpur, October — folk music), Desert Festival (February, Jaisalmer — cultural events in Sam sand dunes), Elephant Festival (Jaipur, Holi — elephant polo, painting).
