Rajasthan's folk religion centres on LOKDEVTA (folk gods) and LOKDEVIYAAN (folk goddesses) who are NOT part of the mainstream Hindu pantheon but are worshipped as local heroes and heroines who achieved divine status through extraordinary sacrifice, valour, or miraculous acts. They bridge the gap between organized religion and folk belief, and are worshipped across caste and sometimes across religious boundaries. The five major folk deities are collectively called 'PANCH PIR' (Five Saints).
PABUJI RATHORE (14th century, Kolu village, Phalodi/Jodhpur): A Rathore Rajput warrior of the Marwar region. His legend: Pabuji's marriage to Phulvanti was interrupted when he learned that Jindrav Khinchi had stolen Deval Charan's cattle. He left his own wedding mid-ceremony (after only the four pheras/rounds, not the complete seven) to rescue the cows. He fought Khinchi and was killed in battle at Dechhu, but the cattle were saved. WORSHIP: Pabuji is the patron deity of CAMELS and CATTLE. Raika/Rebari (camel-herding community) consider him their protector. PHAD PAINTING: Pabuji is one of only TWO deities whose stories are depicted on Phad scrolls (the other being Devnarayan). BHOPA priests narrate 'Pabuji ki Phad' — they unroll the large painted cloth scroll at night, illuminate it with an oil lamp, and sing the epic while pointing to scenes using the lamp. The RAVANHATHA (bowed string instrument) accompanies the narration. Pabuji's divine horse KESAR KALMI (a supernatural black mare) was gifted to him by Deval, a Charan woman. MAIN TEMPLE: Kolu village (Jodhpur). FAIR: At Phalodi.
GOGAJI/JAHAR PIR (Dadrewa, Churu → main shrine at Gogamedi, Hanumangarh): A Chauhan Rajput warrior-saint. UNIQUE DISTINCTION: Worshipped by BOTH Hindus AND Muslims — Hindus worship him as 'Goga Veer' or 'Goga Rakshak', Muslims as 'GOGA PIR' or 'JAHAR PIR'. His main shrine at GOGAMEDI (Hanumangarh) is the ONLY religious shrine in India where BOTH Hindu and Muslim priests jointly conduct worship. Gogaji is primarily a SNAKE DEITY (Sappon ka Devta/Naag Devta) — worshipped for protection from snakebites. His worship involves offering a thread tied with nine knots. His horse was named 'NEELA'. Born to Charo/Bachhal Chauhan dynasty. FAIR: Goga Navami (Bhadrapada Krishna Navami) — considered the most important day. Devotees dig up snake burrows and worship the snakes found inside. OTHER SHRINES: Gogaji ki Oldi (Ganganagar), and numerous smaller shrines across Rajasthan and Haryana.
RAMDEVJI/BABA RAMDEV (14th-15th century, born at Undukasmer, samadhi at Ramdevra/Runicha, Pokhran/Jaisalmer): Born into the Tanwar (Tomar) Rajput lineage. WORSHIPPED AS: 'Krishna Avatar' by Hindus, 'RAMSA PIR' or 'Ram Shah Pir' by Muslims — another folk deity worshipped across religious lines. His philosophy emphasized social equality, and he accepted a Dalit woman DALIBAI as his disciple (Dalibai took samadhi before Ramdevji — her memorial is at Ramdevra). Ramdevji is believed to have miraculous healing powers. SYMBOLS: PAGALYA/PAGLYA (footprints) — devotees worship his footprints, which are installed in homes and temples. HORSES: Associated with a white horse. MAIN TEMPLE: RAMDEVRA (Runicha) near Pokhran, Jaisalmer. The temple complex houses both Hindu and Muslim architectural elements. ANNUAL FAIR: Bhadrapada Shukla Dwitiya to Ekadashi (August-September) — one of the LARGEST religious fairs in Rajasthan, attended by lakhs of devotees from Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP, and Maharashtra. Devotees walk hundreds of kilometres on foot to reach Ramdevra. TRAP: 'Ramdevji was born at Ramdevra' — FALSE. He was born at UNDUKASMER; he took samadhi at Ramdevra.
TEJAJI (11th century, Kharnal village, Nagaur): A Jat/Dhaulya Rajput warrior. Called 'KAAL KE DEVTA' (God of Time/Death) and 'LACHHLA GUJJAR' (by Gujjar community). His legend: Tejaji was returning home with his wife Pemal after a long separation. On the way, he encountered Lacchi (a Gujjar woman) whose cattle had been stolen by dacoits (Meena robbers). Despite being on his way home, Tejaji chose to rescue the cattle. During the rescue, he was bitten by a SNAKE on his tongue (the snake had earlier been wronged and was seeking revenge). Despite the lethal snakebite, Tejaji delivered ALL the cattle safely to Lacchi before dying. WORSHIP: Tejaji is the deity of SNAKE PROTECTION — devotees bitten by snakes visit Tejaji temples believing they will be healed. A thread (Tanti) is tied around the bitten limb at Tejaji shrines. MAIN SHRINE: Kharnal (Nagaur). MAJOR FAIR: Tejadashami at PARBATSAR (Nagaur), on Bhadrapada Shukla Dashami. One of the largest cattle fairs in Rajasthan. Also called 'Parbatsar-Merta Mela'.
DEVNARAYAN JI (10th-11th century, Goth-Manglod area, Ajmer/Bhilwara border): Considered an incarnation of LORD VISHNU. He is the primary folk deity of the GURJAR (Gujjar) community. His lineage: Bagrawat Rajput. His PHAD (scroll painting) is the LARGEST traditional scroll — up to 30 FEET long (compared to Pabuji's ~15 feet). KEY DISTINCTION: Devnarayan's Bhopa narrates using JANTAR (a stringed instrument), NOT ravanhatha (which is used for Pabuji). This is a confirmed REET question. His horse: 'LEELAGAR'. Main shrine: Asind (Bhilwara). Devnarayan temple at Malaseri Dungri. Government scheme named after him: DEVNARAYAN SCOOTY & INCENTIVE SCHEME — free scooty for meritorious girls of most backward classes who score 75%+ in RBSE Class 12. MALLINATHJI: Fair at TILWARA (Barmer) — one of the major cattle fairs of western Rajasthan (Mallinath Pashu Mela). Mallinathji was a 15th-century ruler of Barmer region.
FOLK GODDESSES (LOKDEVIYAAN): KARNI MATA — Worshipped at DESHNOK (Bikaner). The famous 'TEMPLE OF RATS' where thousands of rats (called 'Kaba') are considered sacred incarnations. Seeing a WHITE rat is considered extremely auspicious. Karni Mata was a Charan woman who is considered an incarnation of Goddess Durga. She lived from approximately 1387-1538 AD. JEENMATA — Worshipped at REENWASA (Sikar). Temple on a hill. Two annual fairs (Navratri in Chaitra and Ashwin). Considered a form of Durga. SHEETLA MATA — Goddess of smallpox/infectious diseases. Main temple: CHAKSU (Jaipur). Fair: Chaitra Krishna Ashtami. KEY TRADITION: Devotees eat cold food (BASODA) the day before the fair — cooking is prohibited on Sheetla Ashtami. The day before is called 'Basoda Festival'. KAILA DEVI — Main shrine: KARAULI. Major Shakti Peeth. Huge fair during Chaitra Navratri. LANGURIYA folk songs are sung. JAMBHOJI (1451-1536) — Not a goddess but crucial: Founder of the BISHNOI SECT at Samrathal Dhora (Nagaur). Established 29 PRINCIPLES for environmental conservation (Bish=20, Noi=9). The Bishnoi community's commitment to tree and animal protection — Amrita Devi's sacrifice for Khejri trees (1730) and their ongoing anti-poaching efforts (the famous blackbuck case) — makes them the world's first organized environmental movement.
